What are these UF challenges?
How do challenges work and how can I participate?
Can I help promoting the challenges in some way?
What if I have an idea for a future challenge?

You can find all this information and more in the Ultra Fractal challenges FAQ, which is also part of our very first UF challenge, the one for February 2011.
If you already know the rules, then you're good to go - read on for this month's challenge!

Previous editions:

You can find all of the previous challenges in this journal. Please keep in mind that the challenge rules changed after the 26th edition!

Links to ALL UF challenges (updated periodically!)Since the UF challenges are growing in number, instead of linking them all in each new one, I thought I'd make a collection journal for all of them. This will contain all challenges held so far, from the newest (top) to the oldest (bottom), all conveniently thumbed for you! It will also be updated each month so that ALL challenges are reachable from here, even the newer ones. And this journal will of course be linked in every challenge, to keep them all connected :aww:
Here we go!

Now we can go on with the last challenge's results, and then I will introduce this month's challenge to you all.

Here is the July 2014 challenge, and the deviations I've picked as the winners!
(Please note: do not feel offended if your fractals haven't been picked. Winners are chosen basing on their way of representing the challenge theme, and I always try to be as impartial as possible while judging.)

The winner of the Formula challenge is blipbl0p with S.F.B.M. Served Four Ways:

140701-01b - s.f.b.m. served four ways by blipbl0p

The picture is beautifully varied both in shapes and colour, and the high contrast enhances the subdivision between the splits. Overall, it's just the perfect way of showing how much potential the Pixel formula has, and what intricate, beautiful shapes it can turn into!

The winner of the Theme challenge is roup14 with Journey of Soul:

Journey Of Soul by roup14

Choosing a spiral to represent the transitory, changing nature of human life was the best possible decision for this type of artwork: the deep blues and the evocative image truly do speak to the heart of the viewers.

The winner of the Style challenge is roup14 with City Skyline at Night:

City Skyline At Night by roup14

By far the most original of the figurative fractals I have ever seen: the cityscape stands out beautifully, right between the water surface and the deep black sky of night. The imagery in this piece of work is incredibly powerful!

The winner of the Other challenge is miincdesign with Negative Energy:

Negative Energy ~ Parameters by miincdesign

A beautifully rendered sense of absence and void governs this picture, which seems to slice down loneliness to fight off the negative energy present in it. However abstract, the feeling the viewer gets from seeing it is powerful and encompassing.

Overall, this month saw a few new faces enter the ranks of the UF Challenges Redux winners, but even our long-term participants contributed some amazing artworks - please take your time to have a look at all of them!

We're done for July. On to August!

Challenge #43: August 2014

August's Formula challenge will be the Quilty Pleasures challenge!
All fractals entering this challenge must use at least one mapping on ALL layers, and said mapping MUST be a mapping that makes the fractal a quilt. The ones known to me are: Kit & Dart Penrose Tiling, Smaller and Smaller, Octagon Limit, and Square Limit, all in sam.uxf. If you have more to suggest, don't hesistate to contact me and I will check them to evaluate if they qualify for this challenge. If you don't have any, stick to these four and make an awesome quilt to enter!

August's Theme challenge will be the Bittersweet Memories challenge!
This challenge welcomes any and all fractals that are made to represent something or someone you miss, or a memory from your past that you wish you could go back to (example: for a person who works, it could be about school). There's no limit to allowed techniques or imagination, so give it your best shot!

August's Style challenge will be the Bokeh challenge!
The so-called "bokeh effect", often used in photography, consists of smudging the background of the picture with small circles while leaving the foreground un-smudged. As a result, the elements in the foreground will stand out much more than the background. Our purpose for this month is to recreate said effect in fractals. TIP: if you don't know where to begin, check the mapping Dots in mt.uxf.

August's Other challenge will be the Frames Forever challenge!
There are several OCAs available in Ultra Fractal to make frames, but they are never the main focus of the picture. This time, they WILL be! The inside of your fractal doesn't HAVE to be empty or monochromatic - you can put what you want in it, but it must be a decoration, and the main focus must be on the frame. You may want to make the frame bigger than you would a regular frame, so that it's more visible and stands out better in the picture. You can find examples of frame algorithms in: jbo.ucl, jos.ucl, mtz.ucl, raf.ucl, sdc.ucl and some mappings (browse for the word "Frames" in the UF search function).

Remember: to enter each challenge, post your deviation's link and thumb in a comment of this journal, and specify which challenge you are entering the fractal in. ALSO: PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU LINK THIS NEWS ARTICLE IN THE DEVIATION!

Please spread the word by advertising this news article - we definitely want more participants. The more, the merrier!

This challenge's deadline is August 31st, 2014. Ready, set, GO!!! :eager:
