What are these UF challenges?
How do challenges work and how can I participate?
Can I help promoting the challenges in some way?
What if I have an idea for a future challenge?

You can find all this information and more in the Ultra Fractal challenges FAQ, which is also part of our very first UF challenge, the one for February 2011.
If you already know the rules, then you're good to go - read on for this month's challenge!

Previous editions:

You can find all of the previous challenges in this journal. Please keep in mind that the challenge rules changed after the 26th edition!

Links to ALL UF challenges (updated periodically!)Since the UF challenges are growing in number, instead of linking them all in each new one, I thought I'd make a collection journal for all of them. This will contain all challenges held so far, from the newest (top) to the oldest (bottom), all conveniently thumbed for you! It will also be updated each month so that ALL challenges are reachable from here, even the newer ones. And this journal will of course be linked in every challenge, to keep them all connected :aww:
Here we go!

Now we can go on with the last challenge's results, and then I will introduce this month's challenge to you all.

Here is the January challenge, and the deviations I've picked as the winners!
(Please note: do not feel offended if your fractals haven't been picked. Winners are chosen basing on their way of representing the challenge theme, and I always try to be as impartial as possible while judging.)

The winner of the Formula challenge is GrannyOgg with Plane Curves II:

Plane CurvesII by GrannyOgg

A vivid, harlequinesque image with dark tones alternating with pink and yellow hues. The swirl seems to draw the viewer straight into it, fast and captivating. Even with such solid restrictions, the artist was able to pull off a rather nice fractal!

The winner of the Theme challenge is Gerda1946 with Jan14 Hopes:

Green is the colour of hope, and plenty of it sure comes out of this fractal, which represents one of the simplest and most vital wishes: to have a good health. Such a great gift is seldom ever celebrated, and very well in this piece, at that.

The winner of the Style challenge is innac with Whited:

whited by innac

The thin gnarl shapes whirl around each other, faint and delicate as the vapoured trail of a hot morning coffee cup. A simple design for a very effective outcome, which exhalts the shades of white throughout the picture!

The winner of the Other challenge is Klytia70 with Inversions:

Inversions by Klytia70

An astoundingly masterful arrangement of opposite shapes! The downward flow in the dark part of the artwork, followed right by the upward flow of the lighter part of it, are boldly faced against one another for an incredibly clashing and vivid overall effect.

All other entrants deserve a feature just the same, so here they are for you to see!

We're done for January. On to February!

Ultra Fractal monthly challenges Redux

Challenge #37: February 2014

February's Formula challenge will be the Gaussian challenge!
The usage restriction is simple and straightforward: any algorithm (fractal formula, ICA, OCA, or mapping) used to make fractals in this challenge must have the word "Gauss" or "Gaussian" in it. It will be a tribute to the famous mathematician. Keep in mind that this rule also applies to layers used as masks.

February's Theme challenge will be the Beginning Again challenge!
Do you remember what your fractals were like in the very beginning? If so, show us with another fractal! Make it so that the style is similar to the one of your first artworks, but improved. IMPORTANT: remember to link (or add a thumb) to one of your first fractals in the deviation description, the one that is most similar to your new work, and that you took inspiration from.

February's Style challenge will be the Minibrot Love challenge!
Each fractal entering this challenge must prominently feature a Minibrot. A Minibrot is a zoomed-in version of the Mandelbrot set, which features the main Mandelbrot pattern repeated in it. An example of a Minibrot:

Any Mandelbrot formula can be used, not necessarily the default one. There are no other restrictions.

February's Other challenge will be the Scrabble Scramble challenge!
The formulas used for this challenge must follow the rule: each algorithm on the layer on top must start with the last letter of the layer right below. It applies separately for formulas, colourings and such. For example: Layer 1 has Mandelbrot as a fractal formula, and Gaussian Integer as OCA. Therefore, Layer 2 (on top of Layer 1) must use a fractal formula starting with T (MandelbroT) and an OCA starting with R (Gaussian IntegeR).

Remember: to enter each challenge, post your deviation's link and thumb in a comment of this journal, and specify which challenge you are entering the fractal in. ALSO: PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU LINK THIS NEWS ARTICLE IN THE DEVIATION!

Please spread the word by advertising this news article - we definitely want more participants. The more, the merrier!

This challenge's deadline is February 28th, 2014. Ready, set, GO!!! :eager:
