What are these UF challenges?
How do challenges work and how can I participate?
Can I help promoting the challenges in some way?
What if I have an idea for a future challenge?
You can find all this information and more in the Ultra Fractal challenges FAQ, which is also part of our very first UF challenge, the one for February 2011.
If you already know the rules, then you're good to go - read on for this month's challenge!
Previous editions:
You can find all of the previous challenges in this journal. Please keep in mind that the challenge rules changed after the 26th edition!
Now we can go on with the last challenge's results, and then I will introduce this month's challenge to you all.
Here is the July 2012 challenge, themed "Copycat Quirk", and the deviations I've picked as the winners!
(Please note: do not feel offended if you're not in the top three. Winners are chosen basing on their way of representing the challenge theme, and I always try to be as impartial as possible while judging.)
First place goes to stormymay888 with Redux Fun:
The techy look of this one artwork works very well as a fake Mandelbulb, especially with the recently introduced metallic lighting effects! The tricky alternance of bright and dark gives depth to the artwork, making it a masterful imitation.
Second place goes to Shadoweddancer with Into the Labyrinth:
This artist truly gave her best in trying to reproduce an effect that is like Apophysis', and it came out rather well given the complexity of the task. The intricate, intertwined branches seem to stretch far beyond what the eye can see.
Third place goes to theaver with Djoek Play:
The bright colour flashes and the alternance of red and green make this fractal look like it should be looked at with 3D glasses, which says plenty about how nice an effort it was in reproducing M3D effects. A real fine emulation job!
It was a difficult challenge and many entries are worth looking at even just for the artists' effort. Here they are!

We're done for July. On to August!
August's challenge will be a Style challenge - its title being Spiral Revival!
After last month's challenge, we all need something easy as pie, right? So there we have it: this month, all you have to do is make an amazing Ultra Fractal spiral. The only guideline to be kept into consideration is, of course, to make it as original as possible: unconventional artworks will be evaluated greatly!
There are tons of wonderful spirals all around deviantART - have some here, but keep in mind this is just a very small portion of the many beautiful artworks one can see by simply browsing in many artists' galleries all over the site.

Remember: to enter the challenge, post your deviation's link and thumb in a comment of this journal. ALSO: PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU LINK THIS NEWS ARTICLE IN THE DEVIATION. (Sorry for stating it so strongly, but I've had lots of people saying they'd enter the challenge without even stating it in their deviation comments, so I figured I'd better add this specification somewhere!)
Please spread the word by advertising this news article - we definitely want more participants. The more, the merrier!
This challenge's deadline is August 31st, 2012. Ready, set, GO!!!

Links to ALL UF challenges (updated periodically!)Since the UF challenges are growing in number, instead of linking them all in each new one, I thought I'd make a collection journal for all of them. This will contain all challenges held so far, from the newest (top) to the oldest (bottom), all conveniently thumbed for you! It will also be updated each month so that ALL challenges are reachable from here, even the newer ones. And this journal will of course be linked in every challenge, to keep them all connected

Thank you!
Wow, it's been forever hasn't it? Honestly, it's a miracle if I visit this website more than once every few months now, haha.
Hello! To give a brief summary of what's happened to me in the past two years - that is, since I last wrote a journal - well, basically I changed a couple jobs, moved all the way to the UK, and have been generally occasionally active on my other account, the one where I post digital drawings. I usually put out maybe one artwork per month, an average that's ironically similar to the one I had here when I was last active.
I just reread through a bunch of old material, that was a huge trip down memory lane. I forgot hal
Life updates
Hi to all three of you who are still here!
My apologies for not updating you in over a year (oops). I haven't been making fractals much, but I still love them and watch the new ones put up by the amazing artists there are out there nowadays :)
In any case, my life has changed a lot after university, more so than after the passage from high school to university. I have a full-time job in information security now, and I'm trying to learn the ropes of pentesting by myself, getting certified (I recently obtained my CEH v9), all that fun but time-consuming stuff. The good sort, though.
I log in weekly to respond to comments if there are any, bu
Points refund
Since the UF contest that I'd set up as the last Redux challenge ended up not getting entries, I refunded the Points to their respective owners. Unfortunately, some donations were anonymous and thus couldn't be paid back... if you can come forward and prove (somehow) the amount you donated, I will be happy to give it back. Thank you for your generosity either way :)
Yes, I know, I haven't been artistically active at all. I still visit this website every day (no joke), but my creative juices are not flowing. I've been absorbed by my daily activities ever since I moved out and the new job takes a lot out of me. I'll get back here someday; I ju
