What are these UF challenges?
How do challenges work and how can I participate?
Can I help promoting the challenges in some way?
What if I have an idea for a future challenge?
You can find all this information and more in the Ultra Fractal challenges FAQ, which is also part of our very first UF challenge, the one for February 2011.
If you already know the rules, then you're good to go - read on for this month's challenge!
Previous editions:
You can find all of the previous challenges in this journal. Please keep in mind that the challenge rules changed after the 26th edition!
Now we can go on with the last challenge's results, and then I will introduce this month's challenge to you all.
Here is the March challenge, themed "Black and White", and the deviations I've picked as the winners!
(Please note: do not feel offended if you're not in the top three. Winners are chosen basing on their way of representing the challenge theme, and I always try to be as impartial as possible while judging.)
First place goes to FractalEyes with:
The negative space in the background makes the spiral stand out beautifully in all its elegance, with refined marble textures and exquisite zebra stripes. This really needs no colour to shine!
Second place goes to Jimpan1973 with:
Checkerboard patterns are almost a given with monochromatic artworks, and incorporating them into a Barnsley has proven to be a great choice. The lights and shadows provide depth to the fractal - a well structured geometric work!
Third place goes to FractalEuphoria with:
The fact this artwork goes completely out of every compositional scheme we have previously seen grants it a great deal of dynamism. Its messy outlook has a very charcoal-esque feel. Well thought out and beautifully done.
We had an excellent plethora of entries this one month and I'm very glad of it! Please take your time to take a look at the others too!

We're done for March. On to April!
April's challenge will be an Other challenge - its title being Threefold!
The only challenge requirement for this month is to make a fractal that has three layers - no more, no less. Why three? No particular reason, other than keeping it down to just one layer sounded a bit too evil to me. (At any rate, it's by no means a given that it won't happen in the future! )
With a good deal of skill, it is entirely possible to make shape, colour, and texture fit in, one layer each. This is up to you to do. Give us your best shot!
I haven't been able to find any three-layer fractals around the web this time, but as much as I like featuring beautiful artworks, I don't think it's strictly necessary for this one challenge. Go ahead and show us what you've got
You are also STRONGLY encouraged to share your parameters should you find some interesting technique you want to share! It's not a requirement to enter the challenge, but if you do it, please send me a message and I will feature your artwork in this journal.
Remember: to enter the challenge, post your deviation's link and thumb in a comment of this journal. ALSO: PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU LINK THIS NEWS ARTICLE IN THE DEVIATION. (Sorry for stating it so strongly, but I've had lots of people saying they'd enter the challenge without even stating it in their deviation comments, so I figured I'd better add this specification somewhere!)
Please spread the word by advertising this news article - we definitely want more participants. The more, the merrier!
This challenge's deadline is April 30th, 2012. Ready, set, GO!!!

Links to ALL UF challenges (updated periodically!)Since the UF challenges are growing in number, instead of linking them all in each new one, I thought I'd make a collection journal for all of them. This will contain all challenges held so far, from the newest (top) to the oldest (bottom), all conveniently thumbed for you! It will also be updated each month so that ALL challenges are reachable from here, even the newer ones. And this journal will of course be linked in every challenge, to keep them all connected

Thank you!
Wow, it's been forever hasn't it? Honestly, it's a miracle if I visit this website more than once every few months now, haha.
Hello! To give a brief summary of what's happened to me in the past two years - that is, since I last wrote a journal - well, basically I changed a couple jobs, moved all the way to the UK, and have been generally occasionally active on my other account, the one where I post digital drawings. I usually put out maybe one artwork per month, an average that's ironically similar to the one I had here when I was last active.
I just reread through a bunch of old material, that was a huge trip down memory lane. I forgot hal
Life updates
Hi to all three of you who are still here!
My apologies for not updating you in over a year (oops). I haven't been making fractals much, but I still love them and watch the new ones put up by the amazing artists there are out there nowadays :)
In any case, my life has changed a lot after university, more so than after the passage from high school to university. I have a full-time job in information security now, and I'm trying to learn the ropes of pentesting by myself, getting certified (I recently obtained my CEH v9), all that fun but time-consuming stuff. The good sort, though.
I log in weekly to respond to comments if there are any, bu
Points refund
Since the UF contest that I'd set up as the last Redux challenge ended up not getting entries, I refunded the Points to their respective owners. Unfortunately, some donations were anonymous and thus couldn't be paid back... if you can come forward and prove (somehow) the amount you donated, I will be happy to give it back. Thank you for your generosity either way :)
Yes, I know, I haven't been artistically active at all. I still visit this website every day (no joke), but my creative juices are not flowing. I've been absorbed by my daily activities ever since I moved out and the new job takes a lot out of me. I'll get back here someday; I ju
